Name: Mikazuki Munechika
What Canon Does the Character Come From: Touken Ranbu (Online Japanese game)
Canon Point: At some point on the Ikedaya Incident map (world 5) as they are fighting those trying to change history.
Sex/Gender: Male
Actual Age/Apparent Age: His true form (a sword) was forged in the early 1100s, making him possibly in the 900s in actual age. As for his apparent age, he looks to be in his late 20s.

Appearance: Mikazuki is known as one of the most beautiful swords ever crafted in Japan’s history. He earned his name Mikazuki (crescent moon) due to the patterns in the blade as well as on the sheath. His human form is relatively tall, close to six foot with indigo inky blue black hair. It is longer on one side but short over all. He dresses ornately to match the rare beauty of his blade form. Usually this is royal blue and gold accents. The crest of his blade is a crescent moon inside of a crescent moon and it is ornately decorating his clothing and the pendant about his neck. He carries his own true form, the real Mikazuki Munechika, at his hip to fight with in battle. His eyes are the most stunning, being a rich blue with a gold crescent moon haloing the pupil.

World: He is from a world, but I will note that he is not truly an original character. Instead, he is a canon character but with very little canon background.

Belongings: Mikazuki only has the clothes he is wearing and his true form (the sword) that hangs at his side.

Skills and Powers: Mikazuki, being a sword, does not age. As long as he is taken care of, his form will always stay pristine. Where he is ‘human’ he is still a sword. Swords require proper care. As for skills, he is skilled in swordsmanship and seems to have a way with animals though he is not exactly sure why.

Bookmark Description:
It is royal blue with the same angular same tone pattern that you will see on his clothing. His crest is emblazoned on the bookmark in sparkling gold. The dot at the bottom where the crescents meet is a sparkling diamond like dot to complete the crest.

History and Personality:

Mikazuki Munechika was forged in the Heian period of Japan between the 1000s to 1100s by the famous swordsmith Munechika Sanjo. He was “[o]ne of the Five Swords under Heaven (天下五剣); the name, [meaning] "crescent moon" refers to the shape of the tempering pattern; owned by Kōdai-in, wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi who bequeathed it to Tokugawa Hidetada, then handed down in theTokugawa clan.” It continued to be passed down through the Tokugawa family and was finally donated to the Tokyo National Museum. There it can still be seen during certain times of the year.

Due to the ornate patterns and design (especially the curvature of the blade), it is believed that Mikazuki saw little combat during its long existence. It is said that the sword spent most of its time on display until it was finally taken into its first and final battle. (This is, of course, speculation. But it is the history I will use for Mikazuki’s memories.)

(Starting with Touken Ranbu…) The Saniwa (sage) is chosen to lead a battle against evil forces determined to change history to control the present. Along with the ability to time travel, the Saniwa can forge and find swords of history and breathe life into them. Doing this brings out the human forms of famous swords in order to build an army to fight to keep things as they are. As this occurs, Mikazuki was forged and brought to life. Being the oldest and rarest of the Saniwa’s army, he is strong and very capable in the long battle to protect time.

Personality:

Mikazuki spent much of his existence on a pedestal. The existence was lonely and left him bereft of touch and often even a sense of purpose. This lack of experience and seeing people left him curious and slightly touch starved. He is incapable of the smallest of things and has no fashion sense whatsoever. Granted, he has no issue proclaiming that fact. Yet, in the same way, he’s very unsure how to do most things without being taught first. Regardless, he is a quick learner (though prone to pretend he didn’t understand so he can see you try to teach him again).

Being so old and forced to be so patient through inactivity, he is ultimately curious and pleased to be able to move around on his own volition. He likes to people watch and interact. More often than not he will answer with a laugh or a calm, serene smile. He is gentle, always thoughtful and loves his tea time. He is also inclined to flirting, though much of it is teasing. His tendency to insist it’s alright for people to touch him is born from his long life of not being handled as a sword is meant to be handled. Being a sword alone may actually explain a lot of his strange commentary that may not seem normal. Such as his amusement at being an ‘old man’ due to his actual age. He may very well refer to himself as ‘Jiji’ meaning ‘old man’ or ‘grandpa’ in Japanese. (Just try not to take his slightly perverted comments too seriously.)

Mikazuki is loyal. He will fight hard and not worry too much about how he looks in combat. He does seem to lean toward that need for a master as swords are wont to do… but he is also capable of leading when necessary. Where his body is ornate and the clothing he was brought to life in is as well… he does not ask for care and will often neglect it till he is very much in need of attention. Being brought up in such a respectful culture, he is also extraordinarily polite (adding on to this inability to ask for care when it is imperative that he get it).

Overall, he may come off carefree due to that incessant smile and laughter, but he is older and wiser than he lets on. He is even prone to feigned coy behavior like hiding a smile behind a fan or a long sleeve. But in reality, he is a sword. A weapon to be wielded and cared for. If his true form rusts or tarnishes, his health will deplete as well.

How curious! [The video camera turns on its side, flips over and then returns to viewing the young man’s face. His brilliant deep blue eyes turned brighter, causing the gold around the pupil to light up in pure amusement.] Ha ha! I have never seen such… Aruji-dono does have something similar…

[He smiles all the more, as he tilts his head to the side.] Perhaps someone can tell me where I am? I really shouldn’t be away too long from Aruji-dono, she might need as all of the Toushirous are truly a handful on her own. [A finger presses to his chin thoughtfully.] Though, Ichigo-kun should have his brothers in hand… perhaps I am here for a reason greater than preventing the altering of history?




Third Person/Prose:

Standing in the atrium, he could hear the sound of the water in the large marble pools. Marble reminded him of museums and old buildings. It reminded him of the cold isolation on stands. The added echo from the vaulting ceilings didn’t help this feeling either. A terrible feeling of being alone. But this time it felt slightly different. The sound of the water was new instead of silence, and the glass ceiling above showed an ocean of stars and swirled patterns like dust on the black velvet back drop.

He couldn’t find the moon. He long gave up on finding it after patiently watching the changing sky. Mikazuki could still enjoy the beauty there. A new sight. Something different and unexpected. It made him wonder if Tsurumaru would also like this strange and surprising place. Not that he’d been there long. The novelty, perhaps, may wear off sooner than expected. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t or wouldn’t find purpose here. Or even people that might intrigue him.

For now, he embraced the quiet. A cup in hand full of steaming tea that the tall Librarian had made for him. He would have to look for him and share a cup with him. That man felt as old as himself. Perhaps older. “Ha ha… Someone who is older than me? How strange.” His laugh got lost in the sound of the water, and he found he appreciated that.
